If you are in business, the Rat year may bring you some luck if ever you decide to participate in the Mauritius Business Excellence Award 2008.

This initiative ministry of Industry has been made public by  Minister Rajesh Jeetah at Labourdonnais Hotel Monday last. Among those present were high profile and humble private sector operators, industry and commerce NGOs and public sector officials. This is the first time ever that Government is taking such an initiative.

Business Excellence Awards (BEA), as has been pointed out at the ceremony, exist in many countries. And experience has shown that for both participants and winners, BEA can prove to be very fruitful.

Minister Jeetah pointed out that the BEA will allow participants to become more aware of the requirements to run a business.

He said that evaluation criteria for potential winners will uphold values like leadership and motivation, planning and strategic planning, human resource development, marketing, management in general, social responsibility, among other things. This Award will in some way help operators to revisit the way they actually do business. Respect for norms and standards, production of quality goods and services would also be critical areas in overall assessment.

Minister Jeetah is of the opinion that this Award will help motivate all enterprises to go for excellence, in terms of business practices. Winners, he said, could become role models.

This competition is open to almost all business sectors whether small, medium or big, employing, respectively, less than 10 persons, between 10 and 50 and more than 50 employees.

Two prizes will reward winners in each of the three categories. A technical assessment team will pre-select entries and their recommendations will be then submitted to a panel of jury. The latter will submit their views to a steering committee. Participants should apply by filling the application form available on the ministry’s website (www.industry.gov.mu). Information regarding this competition can be obtained by calling 210 7100 (Ext 253/257) or 253  0326.
