Acall for proposals has been launched by the Ministry of Finance jointly with the EU to non state actors (NSA) in the Decentralised Cooperation Programme. The grants value will vary between 3,000 to 10,000 euros, that is Rs126,000 to Rs420,000 for each project, Claudia Weidey, Head of delegation of the EU, said.

A recent survey has identified that 26,000 Mauritian families live in pockets of poverty across the island and these projects will help tackle the poverty alleviation challenges in Mauritius.
“We want to reinforce the role of the civil society and we provide a period of eight months for them to present a grand request and a sustainable project,” she added.

The areas of intervention must be related to : poverty alleviation micro projects in Mauritius and Rodrigues, community-based projects related to Natural Resource Management issues in Rodrigues and support to initiatives promoting the role of youth in good governance, including Human Rights and the fight against fraud and corruption.

“The Small Grants Window will be implemented through the Trust Fund for the Social Integration of
vulnerable groups which will help NSAs to formulate their grant requests,” Weidey said.

“64% of the money will be disbursed for projects to help women, children, and vulnerable groups such as farmers, fishermen, and small producers. 31% will be dedicated to water, lagoon preservation and reforestation projects while the remaining 5% will be used to sensitize the population to good governance,” said the Minister of Finance, Rama Sithanen.

“We have done our best to simplify the applications for the interested parties. They will be able to present their projects in English, French and Creole. Moreover we will provide grants for up to 75% of the project cost and the applicants will ensure an overall contribution of 25% both in cash and in kind,” Sithanen said.

He stressed the need for cooperation and coordination so that the money being spent is done in the most effective and productive manner to yield maximum results. A meeting will soon be scheduled with all relevant stakeholders to coordinate and harmonize actions, he said, adding “We need to focus on our resources to decrease poverty while at the same time ensuring that the fruits of the programmes are shared.”
