Tortured, battered and bruised and left in a comatose state. This was the sad ending of a nine year-old boy who passed away on Tuesday after falling into a coma more than a month ago. His stepfather now faces a charge of attempted murder.
Tied to a pole, Sayfullah Fokeebux was kicked, punched, belted and had burns caused by cigarettes on his groin by his step-father. This was the statement that the young boy's aunt gave to police that led to the arrest of Sayed Mamode Soobhan, 33, on April 11.
Sayed, from Vallée Pitot, was remanded to cell under a provisional charge of attempted homicide, but with the passing away of the victim, a charge of attempted murder has been retained against him.
The aunt added that Seyfoullah's older sister, 10, from Boulevard Victoria, Vallée Pitot, was also mistreated by the suspect, stating that she was forced to clean the house and prepare dinner and was also assigned the
responsibility of caring for three other step-brothers and sisters.
The suspect denied that he deliberately tortured the boy. He told police that Seyfoullah tripped and fell in the bathroom. Explaining the bruises over the boy's body, Sayed said that he used a belt to punish him when he misbehaved.
On the day of the arrest, Seyfoullah's mother was also interrogated by police, but was later released.
People in the neighbourhood had gathered outside the house and told reporters that they were aware that Seyfoullah's sister was also beaten and that the mother should also face charges. One lady said that it was impossible for the mother to escape scot-free. “She should be arrested too. How could she remain mute and allow her partner to torture the kids?” she said.
Seyfoullah and his 10 year-old sister are kids from the mother's first marriage. After their biological father left the home, their mother co-habited with Sayed. From this relationship the couple have a boy and two girls.
