The Prime Minister, Dr Navin Ramgoolam, was having refreshments in Jeehchee Seewoopaul's house, in Triolet, on Monday, when a lady, DB, determinedly made her way towards him. She pushed through the hordes of people and security officers and caught the undivided attention of the PM. In tears and with a sobbing voice, she told the PM that she was in trouble and needed his help. “I'm at a loss. I was robbed not long ago, and the culprits who stole all my belongings came to my house wielding sabres and threatened to kill me if I make a statement against them. I have already been to the police, and they are not taking me seriously. Please help me PM,” she said.
Listening intently to the lady, the Prime Minister, waved his security officers away and in a compassionate moment, like a son to his mother, allayed her fears. “Please don't cry and calm down. We do not want to spoil today's celebration. I have heard your problem and I will see what I can do for you. Give your name and contact details to my security staff and we will contact you,” he said.
Relieved and relaxed DB stopped crying and thanked the PM for his kind and re-assuring words.
DB told News On Sunday that the robbery at her home happened during the Mon Goût flooding. “Thieves broke into my kitchen and stole everything except the sink. I found out that one RR was involved and I made a police statement,” she said. Despite having given a statement, DB, still felt that her life was in danger. “RR came to my house with a sabre last Saturday and threatened to kill me. I'm living in fear and the police haven't even lifted a finger. I pray that the PM answers my distress call,” she said.
