An architect is the person responsible for the whole design concept of a building, starting from the design on the drawing board to the completion of the building.
The work of an architect includes several tasks. He may have to carry out research to ensure that his designs and fittings, furniture and decorations do not exceed the budget of the client. Therefore, the advice of an architect is important to the client. His work also consists of co-ordinating with relevant authorities on the plans and with the consultants and stakeholders involved in the project.
The supervision of the construction and the site of work also depends on the architect responsible for the project. He/she has to inspect the completed works and see to it that the works comply with building regulations and the expectations of the client.
To be an architect, one has to go through five years of training in a university or a specialised tertiary institution in architecture followed by one year of practical training. However, to gain admission to study architecture, Mathematics, Physics, D & C and Art as principal subjects at the HSC level are required.
Architects must be creative by nature and must also be interested in the environment. Having good communication skills is a plus as these will help him/her to deal with contractors and workers. He/she should be a motivated leader and should be able to co-operate with other workers.
Also, an architect must be in line with the expectations of the clients while always keeping in mind the ecology of the surroundings.
With the construction of so many buildings, job opportunities for architects are not lacking in Mauritius.
