Police succeeded in nabbing the suspect, Serge David Hansley Legentil, by tracing the calls made and received on the victim's stolen mobile phone.
On Tuesday afternoon, CID interrogated the suspect's step brother, a 23 year-old mason, in Petite Rivière. The man denied any involvement in the affair and said despite the SIM card being registered in his name, it belonged to his younger step brother.
Police traced a second SIM card used on the victim's phone and this time it belonged to another step-brother, a 26-year-old security guard who lived in Quatre Bornes. He also denied that he had anything to do with the attack and told officers that he bought the mobile phone for Rs 500 from his younger step-brother, who lived in Pointe aux Sables.
Rose-Hill CID arrested the 17 year-old on Wednesday morning, who was in hiding at a relative’s place, and took him to the Quatre-Bornes police station for questioning. The 22 year-old victim positively identified the suspect at the Quatre-Bornes CID after he confessed in detail to police how he carried out the crime.
On May 23, in the
morning, he left his brother's home in Quatre Bornes, with only one thing on his mind and that was to make some quick money by hook or by crook. He walked along the road behind the market and headed straight towards the motorway. Just before he hit the motorway he went through a wasteland and decided to hide in the long grass for someone to come along.
Soon enough a woman passed by and he followed her. A few metres later, he snatched her bag. The woman wouldn't let go and in the scuffle, she lost balance and fell. The boy pinned her down and got his hands on Rs25 and her mobile phone. The woman screamed for help and the boy used a scarf to gag her. His right hand was on her mouth and the woman bit him at self defence and it was in that moment, in a fit of pain and anger, that the boy said he decided to rape the girl.
At half past two on Wednesday the suspect dressed in a bullet proof vest and riot head gear, was taken to the scene of the crime under heavy SSU escort. The event aroused the curiosity of many passers-by and relatives of the victim.
The suspect was recently released from the Children Youth Centre following a drugs affair in October 2007 and has a pregnant partner.
