Careers guidance assists individuals to make educational, training and occupational choices and to manage their careers. The fast changing business environment marked by the rapid pace of globalization and technological progress, has dramatically changed the labour market. Economic liberalization coupled with the evolution in communication and information technology, is bringing about a closer integration of domestic, regional and international markets. The key challenge is to develop skills and competences so as to enhance employment.
In Mauritius, new sectors are emerging, such as the Land based oceanic industry, sea-food and marine industry, medical tourism, hospitality and real estate. Hence, students need to have access to updated information on employment opportunities.
The Minister of Education and Human Resources, Dharam Gokhool, says: “The current economy requires competence in short-term career planning, enabling workers to adapt to the changes.
Hence, we must prepare and engage students at the various levels of their development through career guidance programmes. Such programmes will give opportunities to students for better understanding their interests and skills to match with desired career choices.”
