Various stakeholders have taken the initiative to help the youth in their endeavour to trace out career paths. The Mauritius Employers’ Federation, in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation, Rotary Club of Port Louis and the Mauritian Institute of Management has launched a manual, 'Career prospects – The way forward for the youth'.
It aims to disseminate handy information on career guidance in a structured manner to schools, colleges, universities and other stakeholders. It will also help in formulating career guidance policies.
Anwar Joonas, President of MEF points out that career guidance is integrated as an essential part of MEF training activities. The MEF will contribute in any initiative to assist young persons develop their skills and aptitudes in a more plausible way.”
“Our youths should be bold enough to dream, set goals, take actions, acquire new skills and adapt to changes and face life's challenges,” he adds.
The Mauritian Institute of Management, with its council members, who are representatives from the UoM, UTM, BOI and the private sector, highlights the agenda of career guidance. It has put together a programme entitled 'the management concept'. This involves lectures and presentations in different secondary schools.
The MEF and the MIM have been very
instrumental in shaping the career prospects of many young persons for the past decades. Courses such as Advanced Certificate in Human Resource Management, Diploma in Human Resource Management, Advanced Certificate in Business Management, Diploma in Business Management, MSc and MBA are organized annually attracting participants from a range of organizations cutting across the private and public sectors.
The Ministry of Education have initiated a number of projects to better guide the students. Its work placement programme launched last year, for lower six and pre-vocational students is intended to develop the right work attitude, and help them choose future careers by exposing them to the realities of the world of work.
The career guidance service operating under the ministry also provides a pool of comprehensive information on its website. Presently, it is being revamped and re engineered to provide maximum information on job prospects to school children of all levels.
The National Human Resources Development Plan has been prepared by the HRDC to give a broad indication of employment and help in reducing the employment mismatch. HRDC will shortly launch its national campaign for a 24/7 economy. This will contribute towards creating the required mind set to deal with the shift taking place worldwide.
Likewise the budget 2008-09 also puts education and human capital at the heart of the future economic development.
