The Crazy Readers Civic Action Team of Port Louis State secondary school won the first prize at the 7th National CATs (Civic Action Teams) Convention 2008 with their project: Upgrading of school library and promoting reading culture through appropriate activities and media-tech. They will fly to Turkey to take part in the 11th International Convention on Students Quality Control Circles from August 26 to 28.

The team, consisting of Lutchmee Horeel, Priya Hazooree, Assiyah Mahomed, Warda Ossenbox and the facilitator, Ms. Priya Baligadoo will represent Mauritius in Istanbul with their project and will be required to demonstrate their ability to apply quality control tools to identify and solve problems at their school. The team conducted a survey at their school at the beginning of the year and found that there was little use of the school library as many students were not keen on reading. The “Crazy Readers Civic Action Team” was then set up to create awareness among the students about the pleasures and importance of reading.

Priya Baligadoo, coordinator and facilitator of the project, says: “ We have come up with innovative pedagogical tools to enhance teaching and the learning process at school level. The students are not considered as passive recipients but active components of the school system and were allocated tasks and taught to work as a team, develop a sense of civic responsibility and critical thinking.

“The P.T.A, teaching and non-teaching staff, students, various stakeholders and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources were all partners in the successful
implementation of the project,” adds Priya.

Girls of Forms III, IV and Lower six, namelt Lutchmee Horeel, Priya Huzooree, Naajiyah Soobratty, Hebah Elahee, Sharone Tirvasssen, Shymah Nunnoo, Assiyah Mahomed, Warda Ossenbox, Mushirrah Ruhomaun, Najaah Mahmaud and Raziane Hossenbux also composed a song, “I am ready to read” to promote a reading culture at school, and at national and international levels.

Exciting activity
Some other activities that were carried out at school included a poster and essay competition to encourage reading, talks on “Developing literary skills” by Mauritian authors, publishing a newsletter on a term-wise basis and a common vocabulary book in all classrooms. The team also proposed the use of a bulletin board in the school library to encourage reading and share ideas on key issues. Projection of appropriate films and documentaries in audio-visual rooms, the creation of a reading corner in the school library and role plays were also on the cards.

Other activities included a bring a book campaign at school level, the celebration of a Book Week at school in the context of World Book Day, and an exchange of books among students through book clubs.

Team leader, Horeel Lutchmeee, says: “ We are indeed very happy to represent our country at the 11th International Convention on Students Quality Control Circle in Turkey. We have been working really hard on this project and today we are rewarded for all the efforts and sacrifices that we have made.”

“ I am impatient to be in Turkey and we are already working on our presentation for the Convention,” adds the Deputy Team Leader, Priya Huzooree.
