The victim, Govinden Chellen, 62, had left his wife for another woman and fate had it that ten years later, they found each other again and began meeting in secret. On Monday August 4, Govinden had given rendez-vous to his ex-wife under the GRNW bridge completely oblivious to the fact that they were being followed by one Vicky Gorayah alias Kalico, a 24 year-old builder from GRNW.

The lovebirds sat behind a bush away from prying eyes, but little did they know that their every move was carefully watched by Kalico.

According to the ex-wife, the suspect walked up to them and asked Govinden for a cigarette. Govinden told him that he did not have any, and the suspect then asked whether he could have sexual relations with the woman.

Shocked by the indecent proposal, Govinden ordered Kalico to go away. Instead, Kalico, lunged onto the woman prompting Govinden to take the suspect off his ex-wife.

The
two men began fighting but the suspect had the upper hand. He grabbed hold of a rock and used it to repeatedly hit Govinden over the head.

Meanwhile, the ex-wife had reached the main road. She screamed that her husband was getting beaten and luckily at the time an SSU van was passing by. The suspect spotted the SSU officers heading towards him and ran towards the river mouth. The officers gave chase but lost the suspect.

Line Barracks had already been alerted and Govinden was taken to the Dr Jeetoo Hospital ICU. He passed away six days later and according to the CPMO post-mortem report he died of a brain fracture. Since the day of the attack CID were on the case, but because of the death of the victim, the case was referred to the MCIT.

In the afternoon, MCIT, hauled the suspect into custody and he confessed the crime. He appeared at the Port-Louis Tribunal under a provisional charge of murder on Tuesday morning and in the afternoon took part in a reconstruction of events.
