Those small-minded people like Bang Bang should stop wasting everyone's time on forums like this one. We are trying to talk constructively here. |

Now, to IO. Please refer to my previous post and see if the following statement of yours is correct about what i had said. You say, "Z.A.K questioned what would happen if a foreign Govt official had used similar terms towards a Mauritian working abroad." I never said Mauritian but "a person from another place who had worked there." I tell you Independent Observer as to what would likely happen. A Human Rights Issue, in favour of that person on whom the (batchiara) remark was made! |

1/ As I already said, Deva Virahsawmy never used the term 'lerat blanc' against Berenger - The press misreported facts (which is very serious) and people should really double check their sources of information..
Whether DV took actions against such journalists is a different issue.. 2/ 'batchiara etranger' was only used against Cunnigham as he openly attacked our institutions, being a foreigner. People should not be short-minded and not forget terms used by other politicians - irrespective of the political party. What DV may have said was during a political meeting - rather insults as 'PAGLA MAMOU', 'AL RODE ENE MARI POU LI' etc have been used by Berenger, a former Prime Minister, inside our Parliament. Z.A.K questioned what would happen if a foreign Govt official had used similar terms towards a Mauritian working abroad. Well you should rather question what would happen to a Mauritian if he openly criticised a foreign country's Institutions. When multi-billionaire Mohammed Al Fayed once criticised the British Royal family, he had to face serious charges. |

Whenever there is news of corruption, the members of that party immediately jump in to support the persons and/or the institutions incriminated thus giving the impression that the Labour party is involved in it. This is bad both for the party and the country. The Labour party should keep a neutral position neither blaming nor supporting the incriminated person or institution. No institution is perfect because it is made up of persons and all of them are not perfect. I therefore cannot see why someone cannot blame an institution.

Deva’s white-bashing reminds me of Robert Mugabe’s racism against white people. Mugabe blames whites for his mismanagement of the Zimbabwe economy, which is crumbling under hyperinflation (1 million per cent), massive unemployment, food shortages and rampant poverty. But his strategy to look for scapegoats does not fool the world nor the black people of Zimbabwe. Deva’s insults and mudslinging against Cunningham only belittle him in the eyes of decent people. His xenophobia does not explain away the deep-seated impact of corruption in the State institutions. If Cunningham is to blame for the mess at the customs, why does the government refuse an independent commission of enquiry? Why did the police not lay any charges against Cunningham before he left Mauritius?

Independent Observer, you aseem to be confused. I did not put any figure to the renumerarion but only questioned you for having knowledge of the amount.
To my understanding and surely of others, he was offered a package to leave and there was some kind of "mutual agreement" about it, according someone. This was subsequently changed to one month salary " as per the term of his employment" because of his apparent sin of revealing vital information in favor of Mauritius and Mauritians. Also, please know that I did not imply anything with the "buying of silence" statement; it was mentioned somewhere and I referred to it by stating" according to some". Re "Le rat blanc", granted that I did not hear it with my own ears but if it was indeed a misreporting by the press as you claim, it could be construed as serious. The SG should have taken appropriate actions to clear his name. However, going by facts regarding his calling someone "batchiara etranger", would leave one with no doubt that the SG has an inellegant habit of chosing unkind words towards people he is not in agreement with. By way of such manner, the Mr. SG could become a liabilty for his party. If you have friends in Canada, home country of BC, ask them what would be the consequences if a person representing a party of a ruling government, had made a batchiara type of remark on a person from another place who had worked there. Now, tell us why BC chose to meet with Navin and Rama to discuss the problems? Seemd that when he came out of the meeting, he had nice words towards them. You should also remember that he had shown his loyaly towards those he thought would be in the position to clean Mauritius. Certainly, whoever had employed him initially, was of no importance to him in the matter. Finally, do not attempt to portray Mauritius as Paradise Island like it is done to attract tourists there. Honest Mauritians will not buy it from you, for sure. |

I totally disagree when Z.A.K questions whether Cunningham's remuneration package was to buy his silence - He was first employed by the previous Government and his salary has not changed over the 6 years he was employed. If you are saying that his Rs 36 million remuneration was to buy his silence, you are implying that he was not worth the work he was doing and was also protecting members of the former Govt.
Secondly, you should also check the information you have about terms used by the SG of the Labour Party - 'le rat blanc' has never been used at any point in time. This is the result of the press misreporting facts. Thirdly, to reply other posts, you should actually read the article above. The SG of the Labour Party never insulted foreigners in general. He only targeted Cunnigham. Now if people decide to interprete what they hear or read in the press for their own convenience, it is obvious that the mentality of Mauritians will never change. |

Food for thought by Independent Observer, I think is more likely to cause indigestion at the very thought or sight of it. Let me explain.
The words like"le rat blanc" and "batchiara etranger" uttered by the General Secretary of that party are far form the examples of " pagla mamou" and so on mentioned by the Independent Observer. They insinuate and imply something more serious and I will leave it to the imagination of the wise ones. Cunningham may or may not have been involved in "numerous cases of corruptions". A Commision of Inquiry would have helped show the light on that. IO is definitely not in position to be categoric about it without giving proof. He or she has simply chosen to repeat somone else here by doing so is calling himself or herself improperly as "independent observer". Cunningham reporting irregularities to authorities before being subjected to the episode that we all know now, has been mentioned by him. How does the Independent Observer " know and is certain about the multimillion package offered since this sort of thing is usually confidential? On the other hand, would he or she also be prepared to agree that the package, if any, might have been to buy silence from Cunningham as some have suggested? IO, please keep that food in your fridge for yourself and eat it when there is another hike in the price of rice and flour. |

It is truly regrettable and sad to read from some of the previous posts that part of the Mauritian population is still and will always allow the press to manipulate their opinions.
While everyone seems to make such a big deal of a politician using a creole term during a political meeting, they are simply playing the game of journalists wanting to divert people's opinions on real issues of importance. It is no secret that political meetings are far from polite gatherings - it is the case for every political party without exception. When Mauritius's position in terms of corruption by Transparency International is far from rejoicing, people are only worrying about the terms politicians are employing during meetings! If that's the case, why don't journalists comment about Paul Berenger using terms as 'PAGLA MAMOU', 'BOURIK', 'INTELECTUELLEMENT LIMITER' without mentioning the rough words he uses in Parliament and during his public meetings... far more serious than 'batchiara' ! And Mauritians complain when they are criticised as 'Peuple Admirable'? Well is it obvious. Instead of feeling pity for Bert Cunnigham, Mauritians should realise that he is far from being an angel. Do not forget that he is involved in cases of corruption and has allowed tax evasion to influential companies in some cases. Other than that, him having done a good job in the customs only justifies his multi-million rupees remuneration package. So we paid the price for that and he gave us nothing for free. He is nothing but one among other intellectuals and people even more competent than him can easily be hired by the MRA. So that said, and making Cunnigham someone who is only a foreign employee of the Mauritian State, would you allow him to criticise openly our Institutions? If we Mauritians were to criticise Institutions in other countries, the consequences would be dramatic. Now it is high time that Mauritians stop pondering on ridiculous topics as the linguistic aspects of politicians and be more concerned about real issues. If Cunnigham was so ethical, he should have reported his so-called corruption cases directly to the police instead of openly criticising our Judiciary system, the DPP, the State Law Office, to name a few. In doing so, he is cirticising the same Mauritian State that paid him millions of rupees over 6 years, tax payers' money. The consequences? Newspapers shifting Mauritians' attention from the subject and instead criticising politicians. Yes, because that's what some journalists are best at and obviously, some among the 'Peuple Admirable' will follow suit and get into small-minded personal talks against politicians... Food for thought. |

Is Deva Virahsawmy a qualified person ? If he is, then he must not act like an illiterate and if the answer is "NO" then he has good time to go back and warm the school bench. Bert Cunningham is not hungry for money as you try to show us Mr. Deva, he is very honest to open our eyes vis-a-vis the huge frauds that were under the carpet for years. He is the most qualified person in the custom department and I challenge if any of you can teach this living bible of customs. By denigrating Mr. Bert, you are not only pointing your finger on him but to the whole foreigners in Mauritius including the Diplomatic missions who are foreigners too. By this devil action of yours, you are also tarnishing the reputation of Mauritians abroad. This is wrong signal you are sending to the foreigners in our country. The whole population in Mauritius is expecting your official apology for the word "Bacharia" that you used recently. We alerted the international communities for your words where European Unions, United States, Middle East, Asia and African will take it into consideration. Once for all at the end of the day, your political background doesn't reflect your good personality mainly if your hurt foreigners in my crystallic island.
