HRDC grant system
Directors of the MQA and the HRDC told employers on Thursday that the revised Levy Grant Incentives Scheme “ will upgrade the local workforce, leading to acquisition of new skills ” at the seat of the MEF, in Ebène.The revised measures, they say, will be flexible.
The changes are as follows:
* Change as to qualifications in some skills in order to help trainers.
* Registered Training Centres can benefit under the Multimedia Facilities Incentive Scheme
* Increase of the weekly ceiling from Rs 100,000 to Rs 200,000 for a maximum period of 2 weeks.
* Refund of 50% of the cost of an economy air fare inclusive of all taxes and charges up to a maximum of Rs 30,000 per trainee for an approved course of a maximum period of 2 weeks.
The HRDC refunds 50% of the course fees for a degree in Finance, IT, Human Resource and Management subject to a ceiling of Rs 100,000 per trainee as a financial support to individuals, and Employers do not need to submit individual certificate of attendance. Instead a list of trainees who have followed the course could be submitted for refund.
Barclays promotion
Barclays Bank PLC- Mauritius has promoted, as from Tuesday October 20, 2009, Cyril Wong Sun Thiong as 'Chief Compliance & Risk Officer'.
Cyril, who was the Finance Director for Barclays Mauritius, will in his new role, head the Compliance function and will have the Operational Risk Control and Rigour and Legal functions reporting to him. In this new configuration, the Head of ORCR, the Head of Legal as well as the Money Laundering Reporting Officer, the Regulatory Affairs Manager and Monitoring & Training Manager, will report to Cyril. Within the Barclays Mauritius structure, Cyril Wong will continue to report directly to Managing Director Ravin Dajee, whilst, functionally, Cyril Wong will be reporting to the Head of Compliance- Asia. Cyril will remain a senior member of Country Management Committee.
Cyril joined Barclays as Deputy Finance Director in May 2004 and was appointed as Finance Director in December 2004. Cyril graduated with First Class Honours in Physics from the University of Manchester and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in London.
Barclays Bank PLC - Mauritius also announces the appointment, as from Tuesday October 20 of Franco Davis as Finance Director for Barclays Mauritius. Franco will report directly to Ravin Dajee and functionally to the Chief Finance Officer – Emerging Markets.
Franco Davis was appointed Deputy Finance Director in October 2007. He joined Barclays in 1990. Franco graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Financial Services from Manchester University and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. He is presently completing an MBA with the University of Leicester.
MCB/NPF Scandal
Judge Paul Lam Shang Leen wants to know whether the financial transactions of Teeren Appasamy appeared on the MCB account or not. The question was put to Counsel Eric Ribot, Lawyer of the MCB, during the court proceedings on Thursday morning. Judge Paul Lam Shang Leen affirmed that the information is crucial for the preparation of the verdict as Teeren Appasamy is suspected of being the main beneficiary of the amount that was embezzled. To recall, the MCB has instituted a case on several persons and entities to retrieve the swindled Rs 861, 8 million which were deposits from the NPF (National Pension Fund).
SADC conference
The first edition of the SADC Science, Engineering and Technology week was opened at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre, Pailles, on Thursday and will last till October 25. The objective is to sensitize the society about the importance of science and technology in the day-to-day life so that the quality of life can be improved. The four-day conference is group member countries of the SADC namely Congo, Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
According to Dharam Gokhool, Minister of Industry and Research, the aim of the conference is to make people in Mauritius and Africa realise that science and technology is the key to all developments.
Windows 7 launch
The Windows 7 worldwide launch was done simultaneously and in Mauritius it was done at the Galileo Tech Zone, Phoenix Les Halles on Thursday.
Together with Windows 7, Windows server 2008 R2 and Exchange Server 2010 were presented to the press by representatives of Microsoft Mauritius.
During the demonstration press launch, it was shown how people worldwide are using innovations
in Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 to help meet efficiency challenges head-on.
Flights delayed
The rainy weather has aused much disturbance at the Airport. Several flights were delayed because of bad weather conditions on Wednesday and Thursday. After Corsairfly which was delayed, an aircraft of the British Airways scheduled at 8:00 am on Thursday morning had to fly to Reunion Island after struggling to land at Plaisance. The aircraft landed at 13:00 and Corsairfly landed at 00:50 on Thursday. Air Mauritius says that due to technical problems provoked by the bad weather, other flights were also delayed, MK170, MK171, MK218 and MK219.
Training in ICT
The ICT Empowerment Training Programme, an initiative of the National Empowerment Fund (NEF), in collaboration with the Outsourcing & Telecommunications Association of Mauritius (OTAM), Chambre de Commerce International France-Maurice (CCIFM) and Industrial Vocational Training Board (IVTB), has been launched .
The NEF will train 2 000 persons to match the demands of the ICT sector and to reach the target of 29 000 jobs in the coming two years.
The first batch of students will be recruited bettween November 10-13.
Useless mobiles, batteries
Mauritius Telecom (MT) in collaboration with B.E.M Enterprises Ltd, the Rotary Club of Port-Louis Citadelle and Mission Verte, has launched a national programme entitled “Je recycle les mobiles et les piles,” (I recycle mobiles and batteries). Sarat Lallah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MT says that unused mobiles and used batteries, if not disposed of properly can have drastic impacts on the environment, for they are composed of toxic elements. It is with the aim of protecting and preserving the environment that the MT has resorted to this program as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). People would be able to leave their unused mobiles and used batteries in containers to be provided in all the Orange Shops. These would be taken care of by by B.E.M Enterprises.
Post Office' stamp on sale
One of the famous Post Office stamps, which made Mauritius famous in the world of philately, is currently on sale at Baila, Rumania, for the sum of 2 million Euros.
The two stamps form part of the collection of a Rumanian philaterist, Ion Ivan, president of the Danube Philatelic Society.
In an interview to the press agency 'Agerpres' Ion Ivan says that he is thinking of selling the stamp, given to him by his father, in 1977.
The stamp was issued in Mauritius in 1847 in the reign of Queen Victoria.
The stamps became famous following an error made by the engraver, Joseph Barnard. When he engraved the tablets for the production of the stamps in 1847, he put “Post Office” instead of “ Post Paid.”
Mauritius was the 5th country in the world to produce postal stamps in 1847.
The two famous “ Blue Penny” and “Red Penny” of the Post Office series are the most famous stamps in the world and also the most expensive.
New Health Care
The Health Centre, at La Route du Club, in Vacoas, has been closed down and a new building will be constructed. The contract for the works has already been awarded and is expected to be completed in 12 months.
The Vacoas Club Road Community Health Centre (CHC) was housed in an old wooden structure and was in a deplorable state representing a potential hazard to both patients and staff.
Action has been taken to divert patients attending the CHC to the nearest health service point which is La Caverne Area Health Centre (AHC), located within three kilometres from the point of residence of any person living in the catchment area of the CHC.
Unclaimed babies
Out of 25 stillborn bodies at the Queen Victoria mortuary, only 11 have been reclaimed by the families leaving 14 unclaimed.
In the event that the relatives do not turn up, the Health Office undertakes a pauper’s burial after necessary clearance has been obtained by the Police from appropriate authorities.
The number of dead bodies at Hospital as at August 2009 was as follows: stillborn, 25 and adults six. In line with the Unclaimed Bodies (Burial Regulations), whenever there are unclaimed bodies, the matter is referred to the Police for enquiry.
Circonstance cemetery
A plot of land of the extent of 3A 48p at Circonstance, St Pierre has been acquired from Mon Desert Alma Ltd for the extension of the Muslim Cemetery and construction of an incinerator with parking facilities. The deed sale is presently being finalised and thereafter arrangements will be made for the vesting of the land in the Ministry of Housing and Lands for implementation of the project.
