While the Prime Minister describes the 2010 Budget as “responsible” and one of “continuity”, the Leader of the Opposition says it is not to the expectations of the population and the Leader of the MSM thinks it's only a catalogue of announcements.

The Prime Minister, Dr.Navinchandra Ramgoolam believes the budget 2010 is a “responsible” one. It is a budget of continuity, he says.

He underscores that the budget focuses on three broad themes: shaping recovery, consolidating social progress and sustaining green Mauritius. He says that these three main concerns are  proof of  Government’s intentions in ensuring that no one is left out.

The PM does not fail to remind how the country’s economy was in shambles and all the economic indicators were in the red  in 2005. The situation was awful before the Social Alliance was voted to power.

He is happy that his Government has been able to reverse the declining trend of the economy with the result that today all the economic indicators are showing positive signs, and that too, in spite of the global crisis. “We are one of the rare countries to have avoided the recession,” he says.

What's more, he adds, his  Government has succeeded in merging economic growth with social justice by increasing allocations for  different sectors—education, housing, health and social , among a host of others.
He hopes that the Mauritian population realises how bad the situation is in countries that have been hit by the recession and that people understand the extreme measures  taken by government were  justified in the end.

All the decisions, he points out, were  studied thoroughly to help towards an economic recovery.
He also recalls “the great gesture” of the Government in  salary compensation, “three times more than the rate of inflation ending December this year, which is exactly 3.5%.”
