Tourist arrivals drop
Tourist arrivals for the first nine months of 2009 attained 608,885. This represents a decrease of 9.7% over the figure of 674,164 registered in the corresponding period of 2008.
According to the CSO, arrivals from Europe decreased by 7.0% to 403,436 with a 2.8% rise in arrivals from France, our leading market. As regards the other major generating countries, the following performances were recorded in arrivals: United Kingdom (-6.5%), Italy (-15.2%) and Germany (-19.1%). Tourist arrivals from Africa contracted by 9.6% to 142,420.
More businesses
Business activities have increased by 6% during the financial year 2008/2009 compared to the number of licences issued from 113,051 in June 2008 to 120,071 in June 2009. Latest official figures show that the activities were concentrated mostly in the industry group ‘Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles, personal and household goods’(54%), followed by the group ‘Transport, storage and communications’(19%).
The number of business activities was
higher in the rural areas (55%). Activities predominant in the rural regions were from the industry groups ‘Other community, social and personal service activities’ (66%) and ‘Hotels and restaurants’ (65%).

The Landlord and Tenant (Amendment) Bill will be introduced in the National Assembly for the provision of a yearly increase in rental of business premises of 10% of the difference between the market rent and the rent being paid and for business lettings to be liberalized after December 31 2017.
Geothermal power
In the context of the Maurice Ile Durable (MID) Project, it is proposed to develop geothermal power, which is cost-effective, reliable and environment friendly.
A pre-feasibility study carried out by a Geomorphology Expert has revealed the potential for geothermal energy in Mauritius and possible sites have also been identified.
To further such a project, a Committee, under the aegis of the Ministry of Renewable Energy and Public Utilities, has been set up to examine all issues related to the exploitation of geothermal energy and to make recommendations to Government.
