African Charter
Mauritius is signing and ratifying the African Charter on Statistics, which regulates statistical activities and serves as a tool for advocacy and the development of statistics in Africa.

The main objectives of the Charter are to ensure improved quality and compatibility of statistics across countries and regions; and to promote adherence to fundamental principles of production, storage, management, dissemination and use of statistical information in the African Continent.The Charter will help at promoting a culture of evidence-based policy formulation, monitoring and evaluation; and contribute to the strengthening and effective functioning of an African Statistical System.

Sugar Cane crop
As at November 28, 2009, about 88% (30,569ha) of miller-planters’ land had been harvested, an acreage slightly lower than the 30,999ha harvested at the corresponding period last year.

An analysis of cane and sugar productivity based on the harvest statistics for miller-planters for the island as at  November 28, 2009 was 83.1 TCH compared to 79.8 TCH recorded in 2008, representing an increase of about 4% over last year’s performance.  The recorded island extraction rate of 10.14% was higher than that of the corresponding period in 2008 (9.98%) by 0.16o.

Island-wise, the recorded sugar productivity of 8.43TSH exceeded that of the
corresponding period in 2008 (7.96 TSH) by 0.47 tonne.

Sugar yield stayed more or less stable. No major change is expected until the end of harvest as soil moisture will be available and under the hot prevailing regime, cane will start regrowing.

TNS Analysis
Analysis and Taylor Nelson Sofres announced their partnership in business. This new company was launched at Le Maritim Hotel a few days ago.

«The partnership of Analysis with Taylor Nelson Smith allows us to reinforce our expertise, by giving us access to new and specialised methodologies,» she said. Nathalie Job and Mohamed Mouiratsing are co-directors of the company.

« Anaylisis is henceforth operating under the label TNS Analysis in Mauritius, Madagascar and Reunion island,» Mouratsing said for his part.

Re-opening of CRAC
Consumer Rights and Advice Centre (CRAC) resumes its activities as from this week. It is a joint initiative of the Municipality of Vacoas-Phoenix and the Institute for Consumer Protection.
The centre, which is found within the compound of the municipality, will welcome consumers for advice and for settlement of litigious problems twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays between 9.00 a.m and 3.00 p.m.

The aim of the centre is to enable consumers to know their rights, conditions attached to credit sales, and traps usually hidden while making a hire purchase.
