Salim Muthy arrested
Salim Muthy, the spokesperson for the six ex-planters of Riche Terre, was arrested following a movement of protest in front of the Ministry of Agro-industry in Port-Louis on Thursday.
The hunger-strikers were asked to vacate the spot. To recall, the ex-planters started their hunger strike on February 19 following the Government decision to grant them a compensation of Rs 120,000 after the State had retrieved their land to implement the Jin Fei (ex-Tianli) project in Riche-Terre. The ex-planters are claiming a compensation of Rs 900,000 and 10 perches of land each. (See also page 12).
Security on campus
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Mauritius, Professor Konrad Morgan, announced a series of measures on Thursday to reinforce the security on the campus and in the surroundings in Réduit.
He said that negotiations with the relevant authorities to have a police station on campus had already started. He pointed out that he was presently looking at the legal implications of placing cameras at different places on the premises of the university.
Professor Konrad added that these measures were necessary, especially after the aggression on four university students by three masked and armed persons at Bassin Canard, in Réduit, last week.
FFC on Bheenick
The Fact Finding Committee (FFC) instituted by the Government to investigate allegations of abuse of authority and privileges against Rundheersingh Bheenick started its sitting at the Treasury Building in Port-Louis on Thursday.
Sir Victor Glover, former Chief Justice, is head of the FFC. Jack Bizlall was also present to depone before the FFC. The result of the FFC would determine whether the contract of the former head of the Central Bank would be renewed or not. To recall, it is Yandraduth Googoolye who is currently acting as Governor of the BoM.
Chagossians protest
Olivier Bancoult, president of the Chagos refugee group, gathered the Chagos community at Company’s Gardens to protest against the UK sponsored Marine Park project in Chagos Archipelago on Thursday. Olivier said people should be made aware about what’s happening with the Chagos issue and how the British authorities are trying to usurp the Chagos islands to make a Marine Park out of it. The Chagos community present over there expressed their apprehension and fear on the outcome of the Chagos islands. (See also page 12).
No pact yet with MBC
No agreement has been reached yet between the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and the Mauritius Turf Club (MTC) regarding the broadcast of radio and retransmission of television of 2010 horse racing.
MBC now claims Rs 200 000 per horse racing day for the retransmission of the races on MBC 3 only. The new tariff, which excludes the rebroadcast on TNT channel and the radio, is not acceptable to the MTC. Representatives of the two parties are meeting again next week. To recall, the MBC had formerly claimed the MTC an amount of Rs 1.6 million per racing day to ensure live broadcast on MBC TV and radio. The MTC did not accede to the demand.
Case against Bérenger
Two defamation cases against the Leader of the Opposition, Paul Bérenger opened at the Supreme Court on Thursday. He is accused of saying defamatory words against the Christian Church by the Tourism Authority and Events Mauritius Limited. The two plaintiffs jointly claim damages worth Rs 15m.
Stolen camera
A student of 15 years, living in Vacoas, was arrested after he was found in possession of a stolen digital camera worth Rs 9 000 on Thursday. The investigation has already started to determine through what means and from where the teenager has got hold of the stolen camera.
Firm forces man to back down
An employer is applying pressure on an employee to forego his union position in order to have his wages reviewed and benefits reinstated. The tug of war has reached the Labour Ministry and a police inquiry has been launched.
The Human Resources Manager of CIEL Dyers and Finishers Ltd may be prosecuted under Section 31 of the Employment Relations Act.
Minister Jean-François Chaumière has taken the decision to consider prosecution as there are alleged threats on the part of the cadre to the employee to compel the latter to
withdraw from his trade union. The Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment is discussing with the State Law Office over the possibility of prosecuting the incriminated cadre.
Under Section 31 of the Employment Relations Act : Protection against discrimination and victimisation (1) No person shall – (a) require another person – (i) seeking employment not to join a trade union of his own choice; and (ii) to give up membership of a trade union. Ministry sources confirm that as at the time of going to press, no suspensions nor any thawing of relations between the two parties has been reported.
Constable injured
The police constable Mootooviren was seriously injured in road accident at Bonne Mere, Flacq on Thursday. Mootooviren was on his way to work at Rose-Hill Police Station and was on motorcycle when he was violently hit by a truck. He was urgently transported to Flacq hospital.
Man robbed
An inhabitant of Beau Bassin, aged 45, was victim of a theft in Roche Bois on Thursday. The latter was in the company of a friend at a house in Roche Bois when three armed and masked individuals barged into the house and tied his hands, robbing him of Rs 250 000 which he was carrying on his person. The inhabitants of Beau Bassin also had his cell phone and car keys robbed. The victim said he suspected the friend who was in his company. The suspect was summoned for explanations by the police and was then released.
Diesel price goes up
The price of diesel increased from Rs 32.65 to Rs 34.40, with a rise of Rs 1.75, on Tuesday. The new price is in force since Wednesday. Petrol price and oil price however remained unchanged and are being sold at Rs 43.40 and Rs 16.72 the litre respectively.
Bank One new branch
Bank One officially launched its fourteenth branch at Volcy Pougnet Street, Port louis, opposite Dr Jeetoo Hospital on Tuesday.
Sarit Shah says the opening of the new branch is a major boost to business and investor confidence. According to him, since Bank One has been taken over by CIEL Investment Ltd and I&M Bank of Kenya, it has seen important business growth and development.
Raj Dussoye, Chief Executive Officer of Bank One, says that the new branch is the successful result of the bank’s expansion strategy programme. He says: “Bank One has for objective to make its clients and business partners comfortable within any of its branches while they are doing their bank transactions.”
Situated right opposite Dr Jeetoo Hospital, the new branch offers a free internet service as well as an ATM.
SBI fares well
SBI (Mauritius) Ltd, on its part, published its results for the nine months ended 31st December 2009 on March 2 in Port-Louis. The local banking subsidiary of State Bank of India, made a net profit of USD 9.272 million with Balance Sheet worth USD 1 Billion. Both Deposits and Loans and advances have grown substantially throughout this period. Deposits up to December 2009 amounted to USD 663.305 million while Loans and advances rose to USD 589.347 million for the same period.

Lotto jackpot winner
An inhabitant of Le Morne bagged the jackpot of Rs 31 million at the lotto draw last week. The lucky fifty-year-old winner is the father of five children. It was on Monday that he went to claim his jackpot of Rs 31,320,540 at Loterie National in Ebène. The latter chose to remain anonymous.
In a statement to Radio-plus the winner related that he bought the winning ticket at Beehary shop in Quatre-Bornes. He gambled for only Rs100 and chose the 6 winning numbers (5, 8, 13, 23, 26 and 36) by luck. The winner, who works in the private sector, said he has several projects in mind but did not give any detail.
Cement is cheaper
Cement price is down as from March 1. The new price in paper bags of 50 kg will vary between Rs 162.80 and Rs 181.35 depending on the region where the materials have to be delivered. Cement in paper bags of 25 kg will cost between Rs 82.25 and Rs 92.50. Following the decrease in cement price, the price of construction block is also down since Wednesday. Blocks of four inches are now sold at 25 cents less while those of 6 and 8 inches would be sold at 30 and 35 cents less. The new prices are already in force.
