Assad Bhuglah has written a book on Dr Idrice Goumany, the historic figure who died on 28 July 1889 while he was on duty saving the lives of patients infected by small pox, particularly Indian indentured labourers, who were quarantined at Pointe aux Canonniers. His sense of professionalism, patriotism and humanism is recognised by the fact that he positively responded to the call of the colonial government to take charge of the quarantine at the critical time when all the others doctors refused to do so. The title of the book is “Dr Idrice Ameer Goumany: The Forgotten Hero of Mauritius - A short-lived blossom of an emerging society”.
