The 1950s as stated in the previous issue was full of events that finally resulted in the accession of the island to independence. However it was an assiduous task that claimed proper handling and tact to build up a consensus around a common objective.

The climb uphill in the history of the island has started. The forties were only a beginning and the real battle was to come with the implementation of so many measures destined to change the fate of the Mauritians for good or bad. However the Labour Party led by Guy Rozemont and then by SSR was going to preside over the destiny of the island and change the course of history.

Mauritius 1950-60 may be considered crucial in the history of Modern Mauritius as they have alone in the two previous decades laid the foundation of developments in all walks of life and the thirties saw the birth of the Labour Party as well as budding Trade union movements that greatly influenced life in the decades onwards.

They saw it happen. A few elderly citizens still remember the trials and tribulations of the common people comprising lower middle class, small planters and labourers. No single day passed by without witnessing the throes and woes and the rampant misery of these people.

As pointed out earlier these decades were punctuated by economic downturn and social unrest. The former was due to a combination of factors mainly the effects of the Great Depression in 1929 in USA and climatic conditions cyclones and drought.

These are considered terrible and crucial years in the history of the island. It had to face the effects of the First World War1914—1918, a terrible cyclone in 1931, a long drought in 1934 and the effects of the Great Depression that had hit the economy of the world at large that encouraged working class movement and the founding of the Labour Party by Dr Maurice Cure in 1936.

He had rightly pointed out when the aristocrats and democrats were fighting for constitutional changes in the early 1880s that they were paving the way to their own destruction meaning loss of political power at some time in the future.
