This Election Calls for Strategic Voting

Written by
After all the “koz koze”, alliance-making, discussions of a Second Republic, etc., that have gone on over the last several months, we are now on the way to an all important election that will determine the future years of our country. In many ways, this next election is not like previous ones because of what is at stake. The results of the next election will clearly impact the future direction of Mauritius. In that light, how should we vote then? Here are at least 3 approaches that are typically used - traditional voting, policy-based voting and strategic voting.

Mixed feelings

Written by
It is a pity that the official visit of Indian Foreign Affairs Minister Srimati Sushma Swaraj is being dragged into controversy. Paradoxically, political observers were betting on a political truce during the visit of the distinguished guest but it seems obvious that such will not be the case.
My dear Billy,
The Holy Bible teaches us that everything happens at a time preset by nature. “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.

Entrepreneurship

Written by
In the run-up to the general elections, every political bloc promises to help existing entrepreneurs and to promote new ones. At the same time, all contenders present themselves as socialists, and some even accuse their opponents of being a stooge of the private sector, reviving that old cliché of capitalist as the bogeyman.

« Nimakaram », « Li apendant are la braguette », « Ene grand sadique ça », « Zougadère », « Bizin flush li dans toilette »… Les  attaques, les remarques désobligeantes, voire les insultes, dominent la scène politique en cette période de campagne électorale.

De l’à-peu-près

Written by

Battle line sharpens between opponents

Written by
As the battle line sharpens between the Alliance de l’Unité et de la Modernité (Labour /MMM) and the l’Alliance Lepep (MSM/PMSD/ML) in view of the forthcoming general elections, the Prime Minister Dr Navin Ramgoolam goes on scout, probably in a bid to bring the duel between Sir Anerood Jugnauth and himself, avoiding a match between the leader of the Alliance Lepep and the leader of the MMM Mr Paul Bérenger.

Dear Shakespeare : Between the lines

Written by
My dear Billy,
By far the best readers in any country are those who read between the lines, because between the lines there is nothing but a blank space. On the other hand, I know many books which have bored their readers to death, mostly premature. By God, why should people read at all? It’s such an uncivil, unmannered thing to do.

Packaging politics

« Ainsi, le bon stratège contraint l’ennemi et ne se laisse pas contraindre par lui. » Les dirigeants de l’alliance MSM-PMSD-ML seraient-ils des adeptes de Sun Tzu ? N’empêche qu’ils ont appliqué à la lettre cette leçon du maître chinois (dans le domaine militaire).

Are we going to the polls in December?

Written by
The public meetings organised by the two main political blocs, namely the Labour/MMM Alliance and the Alliance Lepep on Sunday in Quatre Bornes and in Vacoas respectively failed to pull the usual big crowds. Although both blocs are claiming to have won “la bataille des foules” (the battle for the biggest crowd), it is more than obvious that voters are still shying away from such gatherings.

Dear Shakespeare : Nobel nobility

Written by
My dear Billy,
The Nobel Peace Prize this year is shared by two individuals belonging to two neighbouring countries that have been at war at least twice in the past. Malala Yousafzai is a young Pakistani girl of 16, while her fellow Nobel winner Kailash Satyarthi is a Hindu senior citizen of 60.
