Rama o Rama

Our honourable Ramas don’t seem to be enjoying any luck where their resignation letters are concerned. These are simply returned to sender. Last year, it will be remembered, one Rama, Sithanen by his family name, had attempted to resign as Minister of Finance, but the Prime Minister refused to grant his request. “You’re there, you stay there,” the PM seemed to have told Sithanen. “That’s your karma.” The latter had no choice but to comply.
This week, another Rama, Valayden, took his turn. The Attorney-General submitted his letter of resignation, but history once again repeated itself, as it has a knack of doing. “You’re there, you stay there.”
And in both cases, the PM was right. That he was very fast in showing the exit door to Dulloo is quite another matter. But as far as the two Ramas are concerned, their intended but aborted voluntary departure has earned them renewed support both from the Prime
Minister and others.
It is surprising that these two have wanted to go at a time when they are doing good work, while there are others whose only good deed towards the country would be their departure from the seat they are now occupying. The only service they can render their ministry is to leave it. But no. They are glued to their ministerial seats and determined to stay glued.
But why has Valayden decided to leave all of a sudden, in the midst of so much laudable work that he is doing and still has to do? Simply because the Leader of the Opposition has associated his name with that of a presumed Subutex dealer.
Rama Valayden should know that Paul Bérenger is used to doing such things. He had once sworn on the head of a dear one that SSR had ordered the arson of Le Mauricien building in the 70s.
And then, it was the same Bérenger who had admitted having given a sum of Rs 240,000 to ease the escape of a drug dealer not very long ago. People living in glass houses should not undress with the lights on!
