    MMM prepares for municipal poll


    The Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM) is expected to finalise its list of candidates for the municipal election in roughly two weeks’ time.


    Ce samedi, Paul Bérenger soumettra la première ébauche de la liste des candidats de l’alliance MMM/UN/PMSD au Comité Central mauve pour approbation. Rien n’est toutefois définitif. D’ailleurs, c’est uniquement dans trois circonscriptions – les Nos 1, 6 et 19 – que le choix est finalisé.

    MSM goes campaigning

    The Mouvement Socialiste Militant (MSM) launches its political campaign this Friday, October 9. This campaign “ which takes the form of a pilgrimage ends on October 30,” Nando Bhoda, General Secretary of the MSM told the press.

    Bérenger targets Valayden

    Paul Bérenger, leader of the MMM, is still targeting Attorney General Rama Valayden who criticised the police for selected brutality on the Creoles.

    MMM champions workers rights


    For the MMM, the  workers will be at the centre of all speeches on this May Day. “Workers are being threatened, their rights questioned and there is a need for the working class to express its frustration.

    MSM favours salary compensation


    This year's rally will be an opportunity for the MSM leader, Pravind Jugnauth, to give a new lease of life to his party and list his priorities. Of immediate interest to him is the salary compensation for the year.

    Boodhoo refuses bail

    The hunger strike started by the Sale of Levy Victims' Association nearly two weeks ago once again raised public awareness on the issue of Sale by Levy. While Harish Boodhoo remains in prison refusing to pay a Rs1,000 bail, Salim Muthy and a number of other victims are pursuing the strike on the Immaculée church doorsteps. They are expected to get support from the trade union movement on Friday evening.

    MSM counts on women

    The Mouvement Socialiste Militant (MSM) is consolidating its decision to present Pravind Jugnauth as the sole Prime Minister possible in case the party wins the elections. Also preparing for May Day, the party counts on a massive support of women for the  celebrations at St Pierre.

    A week before May Day, all the political parties have stepped up their  mobilisation campaigns and oiled their propaganda engines to pull the biggest crowd. The show of strength and war of figures  have already begun.

    Levy victims in tears


    Marie Lourdes Botte, 41, looks visibly shaken. With tears in her eyes and a tremor in the voice, she painfully recounts how the prospect of losing her house and being thrown on the streets with her six children has left her without any sleep for the past weeks.

    The MMM continued to be in the news this week for the wrong reasons – more resignations and more cracks in its citadel. Another of its hardcore activists, Leela Devi Allear, decided to slam the doors hard after 25 years in the party.

    Bangaleea “controlled” in Berne

    Following an investigation by the National Central Bureau INTERPOL Mauritius, no record of the arrest of one Hemant Bangaleea in Switzerland was found. The Prime Minister, Dr Navin Ramgoolam, said: “The whole story was untrue. In 2006 following another article in the press, ICAC launched an investigation, and a Judges’ Order was secured to audit his accounts. Yet nothing was found,” said the PM.
