Dear Shakespeare : Smart Nincompoops

My dear Billy,
There is a well-known quotation in French that tells us,”Plus ca change, plus c’est pareil” i.e. the more something changes the more it remains the same. Or, “the old order changeth, yielding place to the…older.” One of the electoral commitments of the present government alliance was to the effect that once in power, it would make all nominations, including those of its army of advisers, strictly on merit after calling for candidates and a careful selection exercise.

My dear Billy,
It is said, and often repeated, that a smile is the shortest distance between two individuals. In fact, a smile is a multidimensional treasure. It helps make your life and the lives of the people around you, people you know or don’t, more enjoyable and richer. Laughter is a tonic for the soul - laughter, soft or loud, and deep, even if tinged with seriousness.

My dear Billy,
God in His munificence, created man into His image. Man in his quest for a fast means of communication has created the computer. Indeed, the great assistance that the computer provides to mankind is very precious; but its ill effects cannot be underestimated.

My dear Billy,
The history of the world is replete with cases of thieving. Thieves existed even in ancient times when people were supposed to be honest, law-abiding and God fearing. Robbers have had a very long history. In fact, the world has been teeming with robbers, thieves, burglars, brigands, bandits, pirates , plunderers of varying degrees.

My dear Billy,
You will agree with me that of all the gifts that God has bestowed upon the human race, mothers are by far the most precious. Indeed, Mother is the name for God on the lips and in the hearts of children. There is a Jewish saying to the effect that God could not be everywhere and therefore He created mothers.

My dear Billy,
“Be happy.” That’s the blessing that most aged people often give to the young ones. But what they omit to add is that happiness is not a commodity that you can go out and buy from the supermarket. Happiness is something that you have to make for yourself and for others. Mahatma Gandhi, the great Indian freedom fighter, said, “Happiness depends on what you can give, not what you can get.”

Almost each day is devoted to the celebration or commemoration of some event or other. Among the many that are being set aside for some particular activities these days and all through the year, there was the Family Day which is supposed to bring the family together.

My dear Billy,
There’s an old Hindi saying to the effect that in the house of God, justice may be delayed but never denied. The recent verdict of the Permanent Tribunal for the United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Sea over the Chagos issue has come to prove once again that justice is condemned to prevail sooner or later. In this case justice has been done after more than 50 years.

Dear Shakespeare : All Angels’Day

We must admit that, next to God, we must be indebted to women, first for life itself, and then for making it worth having and living. Somebody very rightly observed that “Women are the poetry of the world in the same sense as the stars are the poetry of heaven: clear, light-giving, harmonious, they are the terrestrial planets that rule the destinies of mankind”.
