Who dares speak of respect for institutions when the Mauritian supposedly apolitical President is up to his neck in politics attacking ICAC and the government?
The Office of President is supposed to apolitical. What is this supposed to mean? It means that the person who occupies the post should neither do politics nor take sides in the politics of the country. Even though the law requires that before taking the presidential oath, the preselected candidate put forward and ‘elected’ in the Assembly should withdraw from the all instances of his (her) party, it does not mean that the president does not have preference for a particular political party and/or candidate. After all, the President has the right to vote.
At the Gala Dinner for The Banker’s Award ceremony held at the sumptuous Waldorf Hilton Hotel in Aldwych, London, on Saturday 25th February 2012, the Governor of the Bank of Mauritius, Rundheersing Bheenick, was presented with the « Central Banker of the Year 2012 for Africa » Award. This is the first time since the establishment of the Bank of Mauritius in 1966, modelled on the Bank of England, that its governor has won such international recognition. It was a well-deserved award, and big congratulations to Mr Bheenick!
Rama Sithanen’s 116-page Report on Electoral Reform has the hallmark of a political piece to mislead the people rather than benefit them. PM Dr Navin Ramgoolam admitted that Rama Sithanen, whose PhD thesis was on electoral reform for plural societies, only wrote his piece after taking cognizance of the jurists Sachs & Carcassonne reports on electoral reform for Mauritius.
The Best Loser System is a system designed to protect minority representation in Parliament in that Parliament should reflect the population rather than the best loser MP representing his/her own community. For this system to function, a candidate is required to declare which community he (she) belongs to upon registration with the Electoral Commission. If the candidate does not wish to declare his community, he should select General Population, which is a residual category; otherwise, he is disqualified.
Hon. PM Dr Navin Ramgoolam was invited at an Islamic function on 5th February 2012 at Aleemiah College Phoenix on the occasion of Yaum-un-Nabee, the anniversary of the birth of the Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad ibn Abdullah (saw), a religion which has existed for over 1400 years. It is customary in Mauritian politics for eminent political personalities to be guests of honour in religious functions, be it for Christians, Hindus or Muslims.
The objective of the BLS has always been to ensure adequate minority representation in Parliament as a measure to make up some of the deficiencies in the first past the post system (FPTP).
Because of the corrupt and dictatorial nature of democracy and its electoral system with it, it is often said that for good and healthy democracy the electoral system must be in a state of reform on a « permanent » basis. This, in itself is an admission that democracy does not truly exist, in other words, that it is a myth.
Egyptian Junta murder more Egyptians crying for their freedom.  There is no difference between the tyrant Hosni Mubarak and the Junta he put in place.  The Egyptian pro-Israeli military ruler Field Marshal Tantawi’s appointment in November 2011 of Israeli agent Kamal el-Ganzouri, who previously both served under Dictator Mubarak, as Prime Minister, is rejected by Egyptians. The Egyptian junta must retire to barracks as demanded by the people and the corrupt leaders of the Egyptian military must also be replaced and brought to justice for their crimes.
