Imports and Exports on the rise

Total export proceeds for the year 2012 were valued at Rs 80.4 billion, an increase of 9.2% over the 2011 figure. Around 36% of our exports consisted of textile products, whilst fish products accounted for 18.7%. Sugar ranks third at 12%.

The rise in vehicle numbers on our roads

According to National Transport Authority (NTA) there are 400 000 vehicles on our roads since 2012. Over 20 000 vehicles have been sold in Mauritius between 2011 and 2012. This is quite a high figure and has to be restricted.

Latest data release from Statistics Mauritius indicate that total international trade for the second quarter of 2012 reached Rs 60,558 million, i.e. 9.7% higher than the previous quarter and 13.9% higher than the corresponding quarter of 2011.

Street protests on the rise

“Members of the public should not be the only ones to pay fines for wasting water. The CWA should also be held accountable for water that is wasted throughout the year due to poor network. The drainage and sewerage system needs to be looked at again and the exaggerated expenses of the CWA surely demands investigation,” says Salim Muthy, social worker.
