My dear Billy,
There’s an old Hindi saying to the effect that in the house of God, justice may be delayed but never denied. The recent verdict of the Permanent Tribunal for the United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Sea over the Chagos issue has come to prove once again that justice is condemned to prevail sooner or later. In this case justice has been done after more than 50 years.

Dear Shakespeare : All Angels’Day

We must admit that, next to God, we must be indebted to women, first for life itself, and then for making it worth having and living. Somebody very rightly observed that “Women are the poetry of the world in the same sense as the stars are the poetry of heaven: clear, light-giving, harmonious, they are the terrestrial planets that rule the destinies of mankind”.

Dear Shakespeare : Rodriguan Summer Dream

My dear Billy,
In your famous tragedy “Julius Caesar”, just after murdering the main protagonist, one of the murdering conspirators, Cassius, says: “How many ages hence \Shall this our lofty scene be acted over,\ In states unborn and accents yet unknown?”

My dear Billy,
The other day I told you that there were many people in the world who allowed their existence to become a long stretch of gnawing routine which ended only on the day of their death, or D-day. Such people are never known to take a holiday.

My dear Billy,
I must confess that I often start writing with a clean piece of paper and a dirty mind. But today, it’s not all that dirty in the upper storey. Now that the burly-burly’s done, and the battle’s won and won, some must be thanking their good luck, no doubt.

Dear Shakespeare : In the name of religion

My dear Billy,
Mauritians are by and large a god-fearing nation. Or at least so it would seem to the foreign visitor, as he would meander through the vast number of prayer houses strewn all over the island. First of all he would be struck by the sheer proximity of these places of worship of the different faiths. Domes, towers and minarets do exist and coexist within a short distance of each other in the towns and villages.

My dear Billy,
I can see that you have survived the New Year hangover and are back to business as usual. I would like you, at the very beginning of the year, to transmit my best wishes to the newly appointed Minister of Arts & Culture. I wish him plenty of success in his enterprise and all endeavours he intends to undertake in his Ministry. The Minister must have by now understood the weight of the burden he has been entrusted to carry.
