In five days’ time, on Saturday 21 April, the United Nations’ Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) opens its 13th quadriennal conference in Doha in the context of a vastly reinvigorated effort to highlight the success it has achieved in its primary mission of advising developing countries, and to push on to assert its authority in that task even as a beleaguered “developed-world” group of countries seeks to block the emerging world’s affirmation of their sovereignty, and the resolute exercise of their property rights on resources within their land-based and oceanic EEZ-based resources (Exclusive Economic Zone-based resources).
