The 1892 cyclone had laid waste both countryside and towns on a large and unprecedented scale. Rose Hill presented a ghostly view with houses down, crushed , fallen and completely ruined. A report on the Bassin mill spoke of hundreds buried under rubble. Fallen carriages obstructed the railway gauges.
