Why was Jugnauth proven guilty ?

The Information and Communication Technology Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, has been found guilty of conflict of interest under the Prevention of Corruption Act (POCA) by the Intermediate Court on Tuesday. In a judgement consisting of some 32 pages, the two Magistrates have found him guilty as charged.

Fangoo guilty of fraudulent pretences

Cossilah Fangoo stood charged under Count I with the offence of swindling of Mrs Dewee, the declarant, out of the sum of Rs 15,000 by “employing fraudulent pretences to create the expectation of success.”

Magistrate Anjalee Devi Ramdin, vice-President of the Intermediate Court, in a judgment delivered last week has found the four accused parties Notary Public Vinay Deelchand, Sandeep Appadoo, Mahendra Chooneea and Dharmanandan Sambon guilty with the offence of conspiracy in breach of Section 109 (1) of the Criminal Code (Supplementary) Act.

The Municipality of Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill is solely responsible for the death of one of its employees, Viswash Seewoonundun, employed as refuse collector, when he fell down from the lorry box of a waste lorry while the lorry was moving backwards at its place of work at Impasse Aboobakar, Avenue Rennards, Beau-Bassin on 26 November 2012. It is the conclusion reached by Magistrate Patrick M. Kam Sing, sitting at the Industrial Court Criminal jurisdiction two weeks ago.

Magistrate Wendy V. Rangan, sitting at the Intermediate Criminal Court, has found guilty  both accused parties, Jean Benjamin Georgette and Desiré Joseph Richard Khodabocus under their respective  count with the offence of “exposing a child to harm”  and “causing a child to be sexually abused by him” under the Child Protection Act. The judgment was delivered on the last week of December 2014 and in the days to come the accused parties will be notified of their respective sentence.

Fake landowner found guilty of swindling

Magistrate Wendy V. Rangan sitting at the Intermediate Court, in a judgment delivered on 18 August, has found the accused Bissoondeo Luchmun guilty with the offence of swindling in breach of section 330 (1) of the Criminal.

The President of the Intermediate Court Criminal Division, Magistrate Véronique Kwok Yin Siong Yen, in a judgment delivered on 14 August has dismissed the information contained in counts 1 to 4 against Yannick Jonathan Rose and found him guilty under counts 5 and 6.

Cannabis consumer guilty of possession only

Magistrate Niroshinee Ramsoondar sitting at the Intermediate Court has recently  found a former University of Mauritius Student, Reetish Kokil, guilty under count 1 of information for possession of 67 cannabis seeds weighting 0.66 grams for the purpose of cultivation  in breach of section 34 (1) (b) of the Dangerous Drug Act.

Former Chief Commissioner of the Rodrigues Regional Assembly, Johnson Roussety, who stood charged with the offence of “influencing Public Officer” in breach of Section 9 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 2002 (POCA), has been found guilty and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by the Intermediate Court last week.
