The risks detainees face in our prisons

Prison conditions in Mauritius generally meet minimum international standards. However, the horror blaze that unravelled last week in a Honduras prison, where 350 inmates died amidst one of the worst ever prison fires has raised eyebrows in the general public in the manner the situation was handled. Suspicions are out there that our prisons are not safe enough and if the same tragedy were to ever happen in Mauritius, would the resources we have be able to cope? Are inmates’ lives at risk and are our wardens properly equipped to avert such a disaster amidst all the chaos?

The west and emerging south west offers opportunities for a wide variety of activities that are thrilling, tantalising and muscle building. These activities prerequisite a good physique and a lot of daring because they are full of risks. A slight error may cost life or the loss of limbs that may jeopardise one’s future. However the future lies with such people who are prepared for all kinds of risks.
