Expulsion and night boxing match that did not take place
On Wednesday afternoon debates were so hot at the National Assembly that the Deputy-Speaker had no other choice than to name the elected member of Constituency No 15. This was the result of heated verbal exchanges between him and Shakeel Mohamed while Maya Hanoomanjee was expressing her views on Budget 2012. Showkutally Soodhun was not happy of comments made on Sir Anerood Jugnauth by members of Government and his frequent interruptions in the debates prompted the Deputy-Speaker to order him out.
Late at night while Veda Balamoody was making his speech on the Budget, comments ran freely between members of both sides of the House and at one point the Attorney General treated his colleagues in the opposition as ‘drunkards.’ This put Jean Claude Barbier out of himself who wanted to physically assault Yatin Varma but was prevented to do so by the whip of the Opposition and members of Government. Unable to control the House, the Deputy-Speaker suspended the sitting. When debates resumed later, the Attorney General retracted upon a ‘point of order’ raised by Steve Obeegadoo.
