The pre-selection phase of the Success.mu Young Entrepreneur Award has seen the shortlisting of 150 candidates.  The competition received an impressive number of projects – a total of 820 –submitted by candidates of different ages, various backgrounds and covering all industries.
Success.mu Young Entrepreneur Award (YEA), a project conceived and funded by the British American Investment Group to help young entrepreneurs in Mauritius and Rodrigues to start or expand their own business, has achieved its first goal.

This initiative comprises financial and professional support to three winners. They will be supported over a three-year period, so that they may grasp the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and deal with any unexpected problems they might encounter.

Capital of up to Rs 1 million cash will be awarded to each winner to start their venture. They will also receive additional justifiable support of Rs 2 million, which will include equipment, professional and technical support and training amongst others.

“The number of projects we received was beyond our expectations,” explained M. Eddy Yeung, president of the organising committee. “The panel in charge of the pre-selection was impressed by the quality of the projects as well as the originality and creativity of the 150 promising entrepreneurs whose projects were shortlisted.”
The aspiring entrepreneurs include executives, academics and professionals in administrative posts, or engaged in various activities.

The most popular economic sectors amongst the candidates were leisure, the environment, agriculture, irrigation, energy, education, information technology, construction, health, manufacturing and crafts amongst others.  To prepare these 150 aspiring entrepreneurs for the next phase of the competition, the organising committee has initiated a number of training sessions led by professionals in a number of areas including marketing and sales, management of operations, communications and human resources amongst others.

These professionals will share their experience with the candidates and help them develop and elaborate a business plan that they must submit by 30November 2012 to be eligible for the next step.  An independent jury will then choose five to seven of the best projects and will ask each candidate to present and defend his or her project. Participants from Rodrigues will benefit from the support of a trainer who will travel to the island so that the candidates may have equal chances in the competition.  Finally, a jury will choose the three best projects and the names of the winners will be announced during a ceremony on 31January 2013.

The members of the jury that will select the winners are: Jenny Pidial, Chief Executive Officer of FIT-U Garment Ltd, Anne Christine Levigne-Fletcher, Designer at Creatrice d’Hémisphère Sud, entrepreneurs Dan Maraye and Yousouf Iqbal Dilmohamed and the President of Sotravic, Pierre Ah-Sue.
