At around noon on Tuesday, Asha Rampadaruth and trade unionist Jack Bizlall ended their hunger strike which they started earlier this week to protest against the treatment of Mrs Rampadaruth by her employer, the State Bank of Mauritius. This follows an agreement signed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Jack Bizall has fought for 18 months so that Asha Rampadaruth is reinstated at her post at the bank, where she was fired. After negotiations chaired by Foreign Affairs Minister Arvin Boolell, Asha agreed to a compensation of Rs 2.4 million and the promise of alternative employment. Arvin Boolell thanked the collective effort of the State Bank, trade unionists and their lawyers to reach this agreement, with a special mention for Jack Bizlall. He also praised the Prime Minister who pushed for a mediation to resolve this conflict.
