However, even before the start of the session, the ‘Macaroni Affair,’ which is the talk of the town these days, stole the show with members of the opposition driving the screw hard, provoking anger of government members; the Speaker having much difficulty at ensuring calm in the House, threatening ‘ that some members want to go home earlier!’
With much time lost, Dr Ramgoolam could answer only six out of the 15 questions addressed to him. At the end of his explanations it was the treasurer of the Labour party who provoked comments and complaints from the Leader of the opposition necessitating the intervention of the Sergeant at Arms, asking the visitor in the public gallery to behave himself. The Speaker gave the sergeant at arms further instructions regarding the behaviour of guests and visitors inside Parliament.
The entire atmosphere was full of excitement as this parliamentary session took place only 24 hours after the proclamation of results of the Municipal elections held on Sunday 9 December. A few harsh words came out here and there and the Speaker had to ask Dr Arvin Boolell and Shakeel Mohamed to withdraw their remarks made to members of the opposition, which they did accordingly.
