The 1989-registered truck, a Nissan Atlas 300 was heading from Chitrakoot to Vallée-des-Prêtres. Tony Favori, aged 52, a resident of Roche-Bois, was driving the truck which was carrying tar. Olivier Kisthoo aged 21, a resident of Pointe-aux-Sables and Adrien Bryan, aged 25, a resident of Palma, were also in the truck. Jacques Désiré Goin, aged 40, from Cité Corps-de-Garde and Mevin Vyapooree, aged 31, from Camp Levieux, were at the back.

However, while driving downhill, the driver noticed that the truck had brakes problems. He tried his best to avoid the tragedy but in vain. The truck headed straight into a roadside drain on the left side of the road. In its mad race, the truck even uprooted a tree. It ended completely crushed with its crew injured. Jacques Désiré Goin and Mevin Vyapooree who were on the deck of the truck, tried to jump off the truck to safety but they landed on big rocks, found on the side of the road.

Abercrombie police, the SAMU as well as firefighters rushed to the scene of the tragedy.  The injured were admitted to Dr A.G. Jeetoo hospital. Jacques Désiré Goin and Mevin Vyapooree died on the spot. The autopsy of the victims, performed by Dr. Maxwell Monvoisin and Prem Chamane attributed the death of Jacques Désiré Goin to multiple injuries, while Mevin Vyapooree died of a fractured skull. An investigation is under way to determine the exact circumstances of this road tragedy.
