On Sunday night around 10.45pm, a dispute erupted between them. On that fatal day, Selvina, a housewife and Yogen, a baker, were in their kitchen having a drink. Selvina drank a whole can of beer while Yogen drank a whole bottle of rum. Then he quickly got angry as he didn't want Selvina's family to visit their children aged 5, 3 and 2.
In a fit of anger, Yogen grabbed the bottle of rum and threatened his wife with the shard after breaking it. Selvina seized a kitchen knife in self defence. She hurt Yogen at the leg and the latter collapsed. In fact, he received a severe cut 22 centimetres deep at the femoral artery. Yogen was bleeding profusely. Selvina realised that she had done a terrible mistake and cried for help. It was her five-year old daughter who went to seek help at a neighbour's house.
The neighbour rushed to the couple's house. Rivière-du-Rempart police was called. They found Yogen unconscious, lying in a pool of blood. The kitchen was in a terrible mess. An ambulance arrived on the scene and it was found that Yogen had already passed away.
Piton CID opened an investigation. Selvina was arrested and was quick to confess. In her first version of facts to the police, she said she attacked her husband with the broken bottle to defend herself. However, the autopsy concluded that the victim died of "Perforation of the right femoral artery". The mortal blow could have only been caused by a sharp weapon such as a kitchen knife. On Monday, the officers seized the kitchen knife which Selvina had carefully washed in the bathroom and kept. After interrogation, she revealed the truth.
Selvina was charged with murder at Mapou court on Monday. On Tuesday she was taken to the crime scene for a reconstitution of events. She remains in police custody.
