250 acres of cane fields set ablaze

Written by
Fire broke out in the sugar cane fields at Forbach, more specifically at the rear of the building belonging to Espace Maison & Jardin on Wednesday 10 October at about noon. 250 acres of cane fields were engulfed in flames.  The incident necessitated a strong mobilisation of firefighters, including those from Piton, Triolet and Port Louis.
The strong wind blowing in the region made their task harder. The fire was finally extinguished by 3pm. The firefighters took precautions to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings, including houses under construction. The cane fields affected belong to three companies: Terra, Labourdonnais and Rouillard & Harel  Frères.

The origin of the fire is unknown and losses are estimated at Rs 9 million. Police temporarily closed access to Route 22, because of a thick black smoke emanating from the fire. Agro-Industry Minister Satish Faugoo stated that “strong indications point towards a criminal act” and reminded that such an offence deserves a maximum imprisonment of 20 years. He also said that we cannot tolerate such acts in a “period where the economic situation is gloomy”.
