Bad sport: Two sportsmen arrested for drug trafficking and theft

The footballer Joseph Kinsley Steward Leopold was arrested on Tuesday following a police raid and drug was discovered at his residence. The drug squad has been monitoring the actions of the footballer for a week. When police raided his home, he was caught preparing heroin doses in his living room. A gram of heroin and 22 doses of the same drug were found at his home in Batterie-Cassée, Roche-Bois. The market value of the drugs is estimated at

Rs 25 000. The footballer was taken to the ADSU of Plaine Verte. Kinsley Leopold gave his version of events in the presence of his lawyer. He appeared in Port Louis court and was provisionally charged with of ‘possession of heroin for the purpose distribution.’ Police had objected to his release on parole and he was taken back to the cell. 

Arnaud Casquette, 38, was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Quatre Bornes. He is suspected of having participated in a series of break-ins in the region. On September 24, a report for theft of construction equipment was filed at the local police station. A business owner in Saint Jean also filed a report for the theft a TV. 

Police officers from the CID raided the residence of the former glory in athletics and found the stolen TV. He was arrested and brought to the police station for further interrogation. The former sportsmen conceded to having been behind both burglaries and said he sold the construction equipment to someone whom he cannot identify.

Arnaud Casquette was under bail in other police cases. He was brought before the Rose Hill Court and a provisional charge of larceny has been retained against him. The police objected to him being released on bail and he was subsequently taken back into police custody.

This former champion in long jump has had a brilliant career at the national and international levels. He won the silver medal at the African Championship in 2007. At the Jeux de la Francophonie in December 2015, he failed a drug test and was suspended for six months.

Commenting on these issues relating to the country’s sports people, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Yogida Sawmynaden, stated: “We should see how we can provide better support to our athletes during and after their glory days.”
