On the occasion of the 50 years marking the Independence of Mauritius, government has officially invited the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, to be the Chief Guest of the celebrations. He is expected to reach Mauritius on Sunday.

Ram Nath Kovind is the Sixth President of India on an official visit to Mauritius. He was elected President of India less than a year ago. On 25th July 2017, Ram Nath Kovind became the 14th and current President of India.
National Day celebrations 2018: Full of colours
A series of activities are being organized in the context of the 50th Independence celebration by the Ministry of Arts and Culture.
Friday, March 9
Rally on the theme “Anou marse pou linite”, from Line Barracks to the Champ de Mars, from noon to 13:30, is being organized, with the participation of 2,500 students and youth organizations, a police parade band and cheerleaders. Traditional costumes will be in the spotlight. The event will end with a cultural show and concert with Jimmy Gassel, Jerry & The Resistance, RDX Dance Group, Les Frères Joseph and ‘Vent d’un rêve’.
Saturday, March 10
A day of activities in the towns and villages of Mauritius from 8:30 am to 10:00 pm will be held. There will be sports activities, painting contests, cultural events and games of yesteryear, a culinary lounge, a kids’ corner, an exhibition, a cultural show and a concert.
Sunday, March 11
A ‘Régate’ will be organized at the Mahébourg Waterfront from 9:00 am to 21:00 pm. On the agenda, a culinary lounge, kids’ corner, crafts, an exceptional carnival, sound and light show and a big concert to end the event.
Monday, March 12
The flag raising, parades, demonstration and police force show, Indian Navy Helicopter show, cultural show, sound and light show will be held at the Champ de Mars from 18:00 to 21:00.
On the same day, at Desforges Street from 21:00 to midnight, a great concert, a culinary corner, kid’s corner, cinema, magic show as well as martial arts, street football and zumba.
