Light Rail Project back on agenda

The Minister of Finance is expected to confirm revival of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in his upcoming budget speech. A committee was established with the aim to make this project financially sustainable. Precise instructions were given to a Steering Committee to decrease the costs pertaining to the realisation of this project, estimated at Rs 24.8 billion in 2013. At the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, several options are under consideration to revise down the cost of the project. The first option: reducing the number of stations. The representatives of the firm Singapore Corporate Enterprise had recommended the construction of 19 stations on the axis Curepipe / Port Louis. The second option: the technology used. Singaporean consultants have defined a route that will cover a distance of 28 km: Curepipe, Vacoas, and Phoenix, the highway leading to the roundabout of St-Jean, Rose Hill, Beau Bassin, Richelieu, Pailles, La Butte and Victoria station.
