Rehoused hawkers still dissatisfied

The president of the Street Vendors Association, Hydar Ryman, deplored the situation of the hawkers operating in Port-Louis. He stated that the government is willing to create a second economic miracle but at the same time, the life of many hawkers is in danger today. “Hawkers are suffering extremely. Due to unemployment, many of these people have become street vendors.” He also recalled that they have been able to work only during the week-end of Mother’s Day. “We are still working in deplorable conditions. The Lord Mayor and Minister of Local Government Anwar Husnoo promised to build proper structures. Nothing has been done. As at now, 339 people are not working. We would like to know what future projects have been earmarked for street vendors. We want to know what happened to the flyover project linking Immigration and Victoria stations where there would have been 1,200 stalls at each of those terminals. I wish the Minister does not ignore street vendors. We hope that the upcoming budget has projects for us.”
