The 3rd edition of the Story Telling Competition for Standard V pupils took place on Friday 17th June at the Cultural and Leisure Centre, Mont Plaisir. The Commission for Education in Rodrigues and the Mauritius Commercial Bank sponsored the competition. The Standard V pupils narrated their stories with a good command of English. Their teachers put in much effort in helping the children dress up in costumes and learn their stories by heart. The grand winner of the competition is is Kelly Castel of Terre Rouge Government School. Two runner-ups were also rewarded for their stories, namely Pierre Jordane Perrine of Antoinette Prudence Ste Famille RCA and Luisman Begue of Port Sud Est Government School. The Story Telling Competition encourages standard V pupils to use the English language from an early age. Among the numerous benefits are the use of imagination and creativity, enhancement of listening and reading skills and the increase of verbal proficiency. Formerly, ESU had organised workshops to encourage primary school teachers in Rodrigues to devote time daily to reading to their pupils. Exposure to the English language from a young age develops skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing English, thus enhancing the performance of English among students. This 3rd edition proved to be a success once again.
