Salmonella outbreak: Small poultry farms cannot operate for next three months

The Ministry of Agroindustry announced in a news release on Wednesday that small chicken farms affected by the salmonella outbreak will not be allowed to resume operations before at least three months. The Ministry indicates that large chicken producers have established a very strict health monitoring in order to prevent problems related to salmonella. The Ministry of Agroindustry appeals to the public and wishes to dispel any fears or misunderstandings concerning the presence of salmonella in eggs and chickens currently available on the local market. The presence of salmonella was detected in several small farms that procured their supply of hatchlings from the agricultural department of the Ministry of Agroindustry. For the past two weeks, the Ministry has eliminated all infected chicks from these small farms. The local supply of egg and chicken meat comes mainly from large farms, underline the authorities.
